With OCTO, The Dream Engine have developed the concept of ‘air muscles’. Eight giant articulated fabric fingers expand and contract with an increase or decrease of air pressure, lifting, lowering and moving the performer through the air. The power and elegance of the structure looks organic, rather than mechanical as the ‘fingers’ behave in the same way as moving limbs.
Set up on a festival site, the OCTO structure is seen as an extraordinary sculpture which promises a show and cultivates curiosity in the audience. How does it work? What will it do?
Shows would be at dusk and after dark to use sound and light to maximum effect. The fingers glow and create shadows. The performance apparatus can be varied – silks, hoop, rope, nets or straps. Viewed in the round from close up or at a distance, OCTO is a big visual presence
